Item: Virginia State Seal Coat Button
Backmark: "MITCHEL (sic) & TYLER / RICHMOND" dm
Description: The Virginia coat of arms is on a lined field, with the motto on a ribbon below, and "VIRGINIA" above.
Construction: High convex, three-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. The button has a smooth brown patina. There is just enough gilt remaining that nicely highlights the figures of Virtus and Tyranny as well as "VIRGINIA" and the motto of "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS". The rim has ample gilt. There is a mild push to the center front. The button has no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Recovered: During the 1970s from the Petersburg, VA area.

Comments: This Virginia button was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
