Item: VMI - Virginia Military Institute Cadet Button - R & W Robinson
Backmark: "R & W. ROBINSON" dm; on ribbon with an eagle between the swallowtail ends.
Construction: Low convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 21 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present. Ample gilt remaining on a over a green patina. Rear is pushed evenly inward. No cracks, breaks, repairs, or other pushes.
Recovered: Unknown
Reference: Tice: VAS294A1 Albert: SU 408 (spear point mainly hidden behind letter "D" in "CADET")
Comment: It is the R & W Robinson back mark that is typically found on excavated examples of these buttons from Civil War sites. This excavated VMI coat button will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
