Backmark: "R & W. ROBINSON" dm; on ribbon with an eagle between the swallowtail ends.
Construction: Low convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 21 mm.
Condition: Good, excavated, secure shank present. Pleasing dusty brown-green patina with underlying gilt. Push to center front with no cracks, breaks, repairs, or other pushes.

Comment: It is the R & W Robinson back mark that is typically found on excavated examples of these buttons from Civil War sites. This excavated VMI coat button will be an excellent addition to any Civil War button or general relic collection.
